Exploring the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department

About the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department

The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department (LVFD) has a deeply ingrained legacy of providing fire protection services to the residents of the greater Laurel area for more than 117 years – and counting! The brave and dedicated men and women of the LVFD live by our motto “Service for Others” and are filled with a fierce passion for serving the community they call home.

As a non-profit volunteer organization, the LVFD proudly partners with the City of Laurel municipality and is known for its active participation in City events and committees, cementing our relationship with the surrounding community even further. With a population of 29,313 in Laurel City alone, our call to action stretches far and wide – our response area encompasses the City of Laurel and surrounding areas of PG County, and we provide mutual aid services to Howard, Anne Arundel, and Montgomery counties.

The LVFD membership is comprised of a diverse team of highly trained and motivated volunteers, balancing their personal careers, families, and duty time to provide emergency services when called upon. While our focus is primarily on providing high-quality firefighting and EMS services, we also prioritize cultivating a positive workplace environment that fosters teamwork, socializing, and esprit-de-corps.

LVFD Leadership

Our organization is strong and resilient thanks to our leaders – both men and women – who lead us towards our goals, inspire us, and embody our values. They are the pillars of our success and deserve our support and appreciation. Together, we will continue to soar under their guidance.

History of The Laurel VFD

The idea of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1898 after a fire on Main Street in which 12 buildings, along with the Presbyterian Church, were destroyed. Following in the footsteps of that fire, the City Council worked on the necessary legislation and a constitution and by-laws where written and four years later the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department was born.

Membership of the LVFD

The LVFD owes much of its success to the exceptional men and women in uniform. Their unwavering dedication and work ethic are critical to our mission. We recognize their hard work and value them as the backbone of our organization. Their service is invaluable to our community, and their admirable commitment is a true testament to the values of our society. We are honored to work alongside them.

LVFD Auxiliary

The Auxiliary to the Laurel Volunteer Fire Dept began in May 1929 with 11 women. Their purpose is to aid and back the Fire Dept’s civic and financial efforts. This has resulted in better service for the local community. The Auxiliary has grown to become a significant part of Laurel’s community, raising funds and providing support. Their devotion has been crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents, and their help is still essential today.
