Passing of Life Member and Chaplain Jimmy Collins

It’s with deep sadness the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of Life Member and Chaplain Jimmy Collins on June 6, 2022. He joined the LVFD in April 1972 and served in many different leadership roles. Jimmy was our Chaplain at his passing, served as a past President of the LVFD and the    Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (PGCVFRA), he rose to the rank of Truck Captain, served on the Board of Trustees, and led many committees over his 50 years in service for others. He was a U.S. Army veteran with duty in the Vietnam war. His wife Marlene is an active member of the LVFD auxiliary.

Jimmy served his beloved Laurel community both as a volunteer firefighter and a City employee for over 38 years. He was hired by the Laurel Police Department on June 24, 1974 as a Communications Specialist, promoted to Chief Police Communications Specialist on September 1976, and again promoted to Supervisor of Police Services in November 1979. He eventually became Laurel’s first City-wide, fulltime Public Information Officer (PIO), a position he held for 10 years. His service to the Laurel community is without question above and beyond.
