Confined Space Rescue on Van Dusen Road

Around 11am on April 17, 2012, units from Laurel and surrounding areas were alerted to the 5400 block of Van Dusen Road for the report of a man trapped in a machine. Tower 10, Medic 10, Utility 10, and Chief 10B responded on the call. Upon arrival, units found a worker with two legs pinned inside of a mulch hopper. Personnel from the Prince George's County Technical Rescue team arrived on scene and began patient care and extrication. After evaluating the patient, it was determined that a medevac helicopter and the 'GO-Team' from Baltimore Shock Trauma would be required on scene. Tower 10's aerial was utilized to help lift the patient in a stokes basket from inside the hopper and down onto the ground. The extrication took approximately an hour and a half.
