First Due Vacant House Fire
Just before noon on February 11, 2007, Engine 104 was dispatched for an investigation of smoke in the area of Van Dusen Road & Sweitzer Lane. Shortly after the engine checked up on the air, Communications filled the box for the report of several buildings on fire at the Laurel Ready Mix concrete plant complex. Engine 104 found a vacant building with heavy fire showing. Three tankers and Howard County Engine 111, with a 1000 gallon tank, were special called on top of the box to assist with water supply. A brush truck from Maryland City was also special called to assist with a brush fire, which was a result of the house fire.
Acting Chief 10 (Brad Lovell) held the Van Dusen Command, with acting assistant chief Pat Dillon having the operations sector. At the peak of the incident, 40 firefighters operated on the fireground. The operation lasted just over three hours.
